M4V is Apple's flavor of the MP4 container, used by iTunes and some Apple apps. For DRM-free files, renaming .m4v to .mp4 sometimes works — but codecs and metadata aren't guaranteed to match what non-Apple players expect. A real conversion re-encodes to standard H.264/AAC MP4 so the file behaves predictably everywhere. Note: DRM-protected iTunes purchases can't be converted — DRM removal isn't something this tool does.
