Some old Windows programs and embedded tools want plain BMP rather than palette-based GIF. The conversion writes the decoded image as uncompressed 24-bit pixels, ready for software that predates every modern image codec.
You can upload one, but only the first frame is converted — FileMorf's browser-based engine currently produces still images, so the animation itself is not carried into the BMP file. Static GIFs convert completely.
BMP cannot store transparency, so any transparent pixels in the GIF are flattened onto a white background. The rest of the image is unaffected.
No — colors that were already reduced to GIF's 256-color palette stay reduced; no converter can invent detail back. What you gain is a container without GIF's limits, so future edits and saves in BMP won't degrade the image any further.
